I've tried putting the CD 300 as a peripheral in the chain which now
goes: parallel port on the Mac, parallel to SCSI cable, CD 300, SCSI to
SCSI cable, SCSI terminator, HP interface box, SCSI to parallel cable,
HP scanner. The chain works because the Mac can see the scanner at the
end but not the CD 300 in the middle. So what am I missing here?

I'm trying to get an ancient Apple CD 300 drive to work with an
equally ancient LC475. I've loaded the correct Apple CD-ROM 5.4
driver into Extensions (running under OS 7.1) and restarted but the
Mac can't see the CD 300. SCSI is working because I've tried a
scanner and that works through the same path. Any advice on what I
might be missing here (other software?) or where I might post for
expert guidance? Regards, John

You probably know all this but.....with SCSI chains there needs to be
a terminator at the end of the line, even with a chain of one. Many
scanners have inbuilt termination, selectable on the back, though I am
not sure the CD300 does. Are there two sockets on the back of the CD
drive? If so, you can use one of these for a plug in terminator if the
CD drive does not have built in termination. If you are running the
scanner and the CD drive together, if you put the CD drive in the
chain between the LC and the scanner it should sit there and work
fine as the chain is terminated by the scanner. SCSI can be very fussy
and it is often worth experimenting though it is best to power down
the appliances before plug swapping.
