At the risk of sounding pedantic, 'parallel' has no place in this situation.

Actually I'm not mistaken, as we're talking HP ScanJet Plus here and the manual labels the interface connector as "parallel". But the important thing for me is the fact that there are people on this list who are generous enough to give their time helping a complete stranger. Thanks chaps.
