Hahaha, thanks, Brian! You could be right about the headphone socket, but it's all there is on the iMac. I remembered that I had an iMic in a drawer somewhere and plugged that in, but it did not make any difference that I could hear. I've plugged my old speakers back in, a tatty Sony SRSA202 Megabass Active Speaker System, with no tone control at all, but volume is the same as the Creatures, at half the level indicated. I can only assume that the iMac is not up to driving the Creatures, which is very disappointing. Unless you know different...

I ordered my new speakers the day after we came home from the MacExpo
and was looking forward very much to having some good sound from my
iMac. They arrived this morning; however, I hope I have overlooked
something in what is after all a very simple connection procedure. My
problem is that the volume is up to maximum and is putting out a
pathetic amount of sound. A pair of old Sony speakers that I was
using produced far more punch than this. Power is on, all speakers
are working and the sound is very nice, but there is simply not
enough of it.

I have opened the Sound window in System Preferences, gone to Output,
but Built-in Sound is all that is offered, not Headphones (the only
socket available for sound output), although the Help does advise
choosing the Headphones output option, so why is it not there?

It must be something I can't see for looking, so, any advice, please?

Susan

Just a guess but maybe the headphone outlet is set low to protect ears? I think you may need to get an iMic - sometimes cheap on eBay. This gives
you proper sound out.
If I am talking out my ** and have missed the obvious please ignore me.
