Thanks for your response. I have a feeling the problem is a rather critically corrupt application which was really badly upset by the Import mess up. I can't seem to get around it by mending permissions so I am inclined to stop messing around and go for the jugular and start from scratch though I am not sure whether I can just ditch the Mail folder in the library and expect the application to generate a new one on re-launch. I rather sense that if I do this it may well resolve the problem. What do you think?

I have just reinstalled OSX 10.4 after abandoning it some months ago (printer driver issues) and all has gone quite well this time. I think in large part because I did a clean install on an adjacent disc and just moved across only what I needed and nothing else. The only thing that I automated the import for was Mail and this is the only thing which is broken. It partially works but
for
a while I could do nothing with the "Import" folder, I have not got an "On My Mac" folder and the icons are generic underneath "Trash". I want to create folders on my Mac but it says it can't create folders on stated path. Also,
when I create a new mail in my .Mac account it says that it cannot be
saved....
Then I got another one saying "error - the message could not be appended to
the
out box". Grrr

Apart from the dotmac account our accounts are IMAP bar a solitary POP account which is switched off. All the five accounts are exactly as before on 10.3.9. In desperation I am trying to figure out a way to re-set Mail to see if starting all over again might bump it into action, chore though that will be.
I
have mended permissions and restarted etc. but no joy. If this sounds
familiar
and you have a fix, I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Drew
Just wondering if this is a permission problem. Try Disk Utilty first in case that helps. Otherwise is and you know where the folder is that needs changing then try using Batchmod to change permissions of a folder and all
enclosed items easily.

Might be wrong but it sounds like maybe something from a previous User (you)
has different short name) an dthus isnt 'yours'.
Sorry if this is up the wrong tree

all the best
