Fair point but as far as I can tell 501 prevails. However, as is so often the spooky way with Mac OS, it is sort of sorting itself out without my conscious intervention. In as much as I have now sudenly found the ability to create folders "on my mac". To get there all I did was create a smart folder, found it did not do what I needed it to do and then tried again to make an ordinary one - tarrah! There it was and so forth. No "on my mac" folder but what the hell.

The only problem I have now is with my IMAP accounts on my domain which, though re-made exactly as before, I am being denied access to the SMTP server, whereas before it was not a problem and the other computers (Jaguar + Panther) are still able to send without a problem. So there must be something new in Tiger which is upsetting verification. I have been on to the F2S tech support ( damn their 0870 numbers ) but they don't seem to be able to say very much because it is patently a change on this computer which is causing the problem. So on it goes. I have changed the SMTP set up for this account and it now works but the problem with the others remains a mystery.

Many thanks Richard and to everyone who has made helpful suggestions.

Drew

Two further thoughts here:

-not sure about the delete and then having Mail create new ones
automagically...it works in Entourage (I've done it) but no experience with
mail in this regard.

-Out of curiousity, have you checked the UID (user ID) for the accounts you have to see if they are the same using Netinfo manager or elsewhere....Most first default user accounts created have the same UID of 501 so you can migrate items across but you may have a new (and different UID) on the new install and this is causing the permissions problem....as it would be a
security issue...I am unsure if you can change the UID for a user but
someone smarter may know...

Hope you get Mail sorted one way or another...
