Jeff:

Thanks for the info. I'm still hopeful that I can use the printer from
Macs on an ethernet network. It does have an ethernet connection card
installed, which I presume was done after it was bought. My
understanding is that the plain LJ 5 did not have the network card
installed, the LJ 5N did have it and I'm not sure whether the 5M had it
or not -- but it seems to me that a printer on a network is a printer
on a network. We have a LaserJet 4000 that works just fine on our
network.

I checked out the link you sent and found some good information. It
appears that the difference between the LaserJet 5 and 5M is that the
5M came with 2MB more of memory, the JetDirect J2550 print server
installed, a Postscript SIMM installed and a LocalTalk port. Mine has
the J2550 (not sure if it's A or B, I'll have to check that when I get
to the office), does not have the PostScript SIMM or the LocalTalk
port, which I wouldn't use anyway. It _looks_ like I've got everything
I need except the PostScript SIMM, maybe some extra memory and maybe
the need to update the firmware on the print server.

Would you know anything about the availability/price of that PostScript
SIMM or of additional memory SIMMS for that printer?

Best,

Dan
