I set up a JetDirect J2550a+LaserJet 5 for an acquaintance last summer
on OS X. There's a Gimp-Print driver for that printer to use under
CUPS. You should be able to set it up under OS X by using the GUI
config tool. To do this, fire up Safari on an OS X machine and go to
the address

localhost:631

There's a lot of help there showing you how to set up new printer
queues.

The printer will not be found automatically because (I think) only the
"M" versions of the JetDirect devices have Appletalk support, and it's
probably too old for Rendezvous.

If you don't know the IP number of the device on your network, there's
a lot of help on the HP support site about this. You should also be
able to get all the IP info from the printer startup page.

While you're at it, check the HP site for a firmware upgrade. That's
what I had to do last summer to get it working.
