Harry,

I got the Canon G12 as a Christmas gift. It's a very nice point-and-shoot that 
isn't a shirt-pocket camera, and actually has enough heft to feel like a real 
camera. Also, it has a viewfinder, which allows you to take many more shots on 
one battery charge than if you use the LCD screen. My daughter, who is a 
photographer, tried out several similar camera's, including Nikon's newer 
offerings, and decided this was the best high-amateur non-SLR she could find.

The G12 is not cheap; I believe it sells for $400-$500.
