on first bootup, make sure u-boot overlays is active: http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#U-Boot_Overlays (it should be, but if your eMMC u-boot is too old it won't be) To disable hdmi/emmc/etc: http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#U-Boot_Disable_on-board_devices cape universal is setup to load automaticlly too.
