Thought Mac Netscape does support automatic proxy configuration support, MacIE does not. We feel that this is functionality that the OS should support, not the browser.
Mac Netscape does not use the OS proxy settings. It maintains it's own proxy settings which no other application has access to. Under Mac OS X, only users who are "Administrators" can even change the system proxy settings. Since there are multiple apps and system components that need to share proxy settings, and IE is just one of the client apps on the system, it only makes sense that the OS should handle this functionality. If Apple felt that this was a major issue for a lot of their customers, they would have added this functionality to the OS already. I understand your frustration. For the time being, I would suggest manually entering the proxy settings into your Mac rather than using automatic configuration. Most institutions do not change their proxy servers very often so doing it manually shouldn't cause you too many problems. If/when Apple adds auto proxy configuration to the Mac OS, IE will automatically support it. -Jimmy -----Original Message----- From: Laurent Daudelin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 08, 2001 8:18 AM To: Mac Internet Explorer Talk Subject: Cannot access secured sites from behind firewall Hi all! I did search the archive for such an obvious problem, and although there were a few messages that were more or less related, I didn't find any definitive answer. My problem is that I cannot access any secured web sites using IE 5.1.2 (bundled with 10.1). I made sure that the proxies settings are set, specially the secure section, but whenever I try to access one of those "https" sites, I get an error saying "A network error has occurred (-3159)." I can access the same site using IE 5.5 on my NT box. I've checked the settings under 5.5 and I see that they added an additional one, called "Use automatic configuration script", in "LAN Settings", under "Connection" in "Internet Preferences". I cannot find this setting in the "Proxy" settings. I can access the same sites using Communicator, which is also set to use this automatic configuration thing. So, is Internet Explorer for Mac 5.1.2 lacking those settings and this functionality? I cannot understand that they overlooked such a common thing... -Laurent. -- ===================================================================== Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Washington, DC, USA ********************** Usual disclaimers apply ********************** COBOL /koh'bol/ n.: [COmmon Business-Oriented Language] (Synonymous with evil.)
