James,

Unfortunately, in dental practice management software, the name of the game
is long-term support/survival...as in survival of the company that makes the
product. The deal is that there are about 4 major players in this area, and
whenever a small product gets big enough, a biggie buys the company that
made it, and soon thereafter comes the demise of the product, and now you
are left with no support, no updates, and now have the opportunity to switch
to another product, and in these cases to another platform entirely.

BTW, Virtual PC is a REAL problem, because none of the software companies
will support it, and if there is a problem (and you KNOW with PC software
there inevitably WILL BE), you are screwed. I even tried the demo on my
350MHz G4 Sawtooth, and ran into difficulties on a single workstation. The
problems multiply exponentially with a network and with digital
radiography/digital imagery software added to the mix.

Bottom line: if you're gonna spend $50,000 on software, spend it on
something that will last, whose company will last, whose product has been
tested for a while, whose products have the state-of-the-art capabilities,
etc...even if it means crossing over to the dark side.

Unfortunately, it is the reality of my business.
