Macs OS X does too support AppleTalk... that is how I print to my laser
printer and connect to Macs running System 7.6 and below.

Since classic systems can get as far as the login screen to an OS X system,
the two computers can "see" each other. What I'm thinking is the OS X system
tries to switch the connection to TCP/IP right away after remote login, but
for some reason the classic Mac can't switch over and thus loses the
connection and reports that error.
