Drove me nutz! You got a MAC from the hardware, then went looking for it on your network, and it never showed up! Turned out they encoded the machine's software DECnet address, that you assigned manually, into the MAC. Companies like LinkSys current use this capability to do the "cloning". Hardware diagnostics and network debugging tools use this feature also.
