The point of the the Remote Only selection was to allow you to use a serial
printer (ImageWriter, early inkjets) which did not support
AppleTalk/LocalTalk. It let you sign on to the internet using AppleTalk or
TCP/IP without sending the same chatty network talk to your serial printer,
which otherwise would dutifully print out miles of gibberish under the
impression that it was a document.

Early systems had an inconvenient habit of switching ports on you. If you
had the AppleTalk control panel set to Ethernet and then booted while the
network was down, you could find that AppleTalk was switched from Ethernet
to the default port, which was the printer serial port. Using Remote Only
prevented this from happening.

Resetting the AppleTalk control panel to Ethernet -- and keeing an eye on it
-- would seems to be your only solution, until you retire your serial
printer(s).
