Hi Dennis, We have an ISP, i-rule.net, in my area that uses a wireless technology that sounds the same as you describe. They have used this technology to hook up rural towns in our area for several years. Someone from i-rule has spoken to our computer club and this is the info that I have gleamed.
The ISP puts a transmitter on a water tower or high point and is able to transmit for several miles. You point your receiver at the transmitter (it must be line-of-sight.) The closer you are to the transmitter the better signal you will get. They are able to transmit further then two miles but can't offer a good broadband signal further then that. A few people from our club have tried it and they seem to be happy. All of them have used this as a step-up from 56k modems. I don't know anyone who has had DSL or Cable Modem and has switched to this so can't compare the three technologies. This is not first hand experience with this technology but since few others responded to your question I thought this bit of info might be helpful. Bob "Dennis B.
