I have seen it here in San Diego, they put them on light poles and cover the major freeways I -5, I -15, I- 8, works good, as you say for a few miles but here that is a LOT of potential customers. I think what your looking at is similar to what a company called Ricochet provides, while not in your area you might be able to check the tech and see if it's close to what Ricochet offershttp://www.ricochet.net/
Well, I had it installed on Monday, and so far it has been great. The only problem is that I can't send mail from this address via the wireless route; have to dial in to this ISP's modem bank. I have six months left on this ISP so I'll slowly migrate everything over to either the new one or to my .mac account. I'm still not happy with Apple Mail though and would prefer to keep Eudora.
