I'd like to follow up on this. Last week, I asked for modem recommendations
for a G4 MDD that was built to order without one. 

One of the options I offered:

Well, I've obtained a MultiTech MT5634ZPX which is a controller-based PCI
modem that works with Windows, Linux, and UNIX. Interestingly enough,
there's already a script for it in the Library/Modem Scripts folder, but the
network pref pane will not recognize it as an available port. System
Profiler says unknown modem, driver not found.

What next? How do I get OS X to recognize the modem?
