Apple shipping 1.25GHz dualies

The mothership has been mostly ahead of its announced shipping schedules and this
latest announcement is no exception
Apple has announced it has begun shipping the Power Mac G4 with dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC
G4 processors. The dual 1.25 GHz system has a new Xserve high-performance architecture
with support for up to 2GB DDR memory at up to 333 MHz, the industry''s first ATI
Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card and an enhanced enclosure with increased storage up to
nearly half a terabyte.
"The Power Mac G4 with dual processors running at 1.25 GHz is the fastest Mac ever
made," said Philip Schiller, Apple''s senior vice president of Worldwide Product
Marketing. "The combination of the Xserve architecture and [X.2] provides an
incredibly powerful and stable platform for our professional customers."
Taking advantage of Jaguar''s advanced UNIX-based architecture and
symmetric-multiprocessing capabilities, the latest iteration of the venerable PowerMac
line delivers over 18 gigaflops. In application testing, the dual 1.25 GHz Power Mac
G4 performs image editing tasks up to 90 percent faster, MPEG-2 video encoding up to
43 percent faster and scientific analysis up to 440 percent faster than a 2.53GHz
Pentium 4-based PC.
1.25-GHz dualies are available now through the online and brick-n-mortar Apple Stores
and authorized resellers for $3,299 (SRP). For example, ClubMac has announced that it
will begin shipping this model by the end of the week for $3,294 with an additional
512MB of RAM.
Editor''s note: As has been noted by other media outlets, the value-leader in the
current PowerMac line is the PC133 867MHz dualy. The crippled nature of the Moto chips
limits effective CPU throughput and mostly cancels the advantages of DDR memory.
It''s interesting to note that Apple is now referring to the memory used in its
"better" and "best" as 333MHz as opposed to the 167MHz (more realistic) figure they
used in earlier announcements.
In general, when computer companies say "this summer" or "in September," they mean
September 31st. Either Apple is exaggerating its shipping timelines to appear more
timely or its operating at a higher level of efficiency. I prefer to believe that
latter.
