Apple releases X.2.4 update
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
February 13th 2003

This release includes a laundry list of fixes, improvements

Apple has released another dot update, the fourth since Jaguar's release last
September. As of 8:44pm (EST), this update is available only via the Software Update
pane.

In the Knowledge Base article (#107362) the first item listed is warning:

"You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system
software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other
means. This precautionary statement does not apply to the normal installation of
application software."

I don't remember seeing this caution in the past, but I am nevertheless going to
heedlessly install the update without disabling the Dave, Logitech, LiteSwitch, etc
Preference Panes I have installed. Call it trial by fire...

The said same Knowledge Base article also lists (a long list) bug fixes and
enhancements available in X.2.4. A cursory reading reveals 45 and there are probably
even more hidden under the hood.

Topping the list, at least to eager beaver's discerning eye, are improved CD burning
(no more extraneous system files/folders), audio sampling, printing (better CUPS
support), networking (the ability to use more than one hardware Ethernet address),
Mail/Address integration and dozens of other enhancements. Do read the through Apple's
enumeration of changes in X.2.4 before you begin using it.

As always, IGM is keen to hear your impressions about this "new" software. Post your
comments below.
