Formac upgrades Studio dv/tv for iMovie 3
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
February 13th 2003
Compatibility problems with the widget and Apple's iApp are being resolved
Formac has announced an upgrade program for the Studio dv/tv, the company's
award-winning FireWire media converter. Formac's upgrade program allows owners of the
Studio dv/tv to upgrade their device to take full advantage of Apple's new iMovie 3
and adds digital audio recording capabilities (48 KHz, 16-bit).
"Apple's new iMovie 3 offers a great new feature set for the desktop movie market,"
said Oliver Bergmann, PhD, CEO and president. "Formac's upgrade program allows owners
of our Studio dv/tv to take advantage of these great features and integrates TV
functionality in their editing application."
Owners of Formac's latest version of Studio dv/tv, equipped with an EPROM version of
1.06 or higher, can upgrade their device for free by downloading Formac's new software
package. An upgrade program for earlier versions of the Studio dv/tv is available for
$49.
New features include:
... iMovie 3 compatibility, watch and edit live TV in movie, special iMove remote
control channel selection;
... Audiomaster software, allows users to record audio in high-quality digital
formats, directly importable to iTunes;
Formac's upgrade program is available for free for owners of the latest versions of
the Studio dv/tv, equipped with an EPROM version of 1.06 or higher. To upgrade their
Studio dv/tv users have to download the two new software releases on Formac's website.
Owner's of earlier versions of Formac's Studio dv/tv can upgrade their studio for a
flat service charge of $49. This charge includes the following service: labor and
parts for hardware upgrade, new software CD. Upgrade registration is available through
Mar 31.
Editor's note: It would have been helpful if they had provided a date from which the
1.0.6 or higher EPROM versions began shipping (last August?, here). If you've got
questions about which version of the Studio you've got, check with Formac and be sure
to include the model, serial number and date of purchase in the e-mail.
On the upside, these new features are quite impressive, especially the iMovie live TV
feed and editing capabilities. The addition of digital audio capture is a nice and
needed touch. I assume it was there previously, but probably required a round about
capture method (ie extracting).
