If Apple Goes x86, it Won't be with AMD

This rumor's not dead yet.
Although the OS X-on-x86 rumors did good business on the vine last year, we've barely
heard a peep about it recently.
Until now.
Downloading Apple's open-sourced Darwin for x86 install, you'll find that Intel mobos
are the favored sons, as well as Intel 10/100 ethernet controller support. In the fine
print, all AMD and VIA systems are "Known not to be supported", reports a story at The
Inquirer.
There have been well-placed - seemingly reliable - sources that Apple have an x86
build of OS X up and running that's kept up to date with OS X for PowerPC upgrades
(i.e., it should have 10.2.4 by now). Somewhere in a Cupertino skunkworks, there's an
x86 box running Aqua - and this sent the rumor mill into a frenzy in 2002, as
speculation about a mainstream x86 release followed.
Analysis: We tend to agree with The Inquirer that the X-on-x86 project is extremely
unlike,y, given that the PowerPC 970 appears to be around the corner. Is x86 a
fall-back position? Probably, bearing in mind that any x86 Mac hardware would be so
full of proprietory Apple ROMS, it's not something your backyard white box guy would
attempt to build. Apple may be both a software and hardware company, like Sony, but it
knows that the money's in the hardware.
