Apple adds 'cluster node' Xserve
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
March 18th 2003
The mystery of yesterday's online store shutdown is now known
Apple yesterday quietly posted a new version of its popular Xserve rackmount server on
the Apple Store. Dubbed "cluster mode," this new version sells for $2,799 but ships
with a limited 10-user OS X Server licence, a single Gigabit Ethernet channel and only
256MB of RAM.
Additionally, the cluster node Xserve cannot be ordered with the usual array of BTO
options, like more RAM, upgraded display cards, etc.
Perhaps the most puzzling thing is the fact that despite reduced features and BTO
options, this unit sells for the same price as the single-processor version, which
does have dual Gigabit Ethernet, 512MB RAM, an unlimited OS X Server license, etc...
Editor's note: One possibility regarding the "higher" price of the cluster node Xserve
is that it includes unlisted clustering software and/or support. Rumors? Inside dope?
Yo, people! What's the score here?
