Moto CPUs used in 'JDAM' munitions

The precision guidance system in many of the bombs raining down on Iraq shares some
genes with your Mac
CBS News reports that the JDAM bombs that are being used to great effect in Iraq are
powered by Motorola CPUs. Essentially, these "new" 1,000 and 2,000 pound bombs are
essentially the same munitions the US military has been using for decades. That is,
with the addition of a precision guidance system kit attached to their tails.
Kits manufactured by Boeing, which cost about $2,000 each, consist of a four-finned
tail assembly, which includes the electronic control system, as well as a "small
structure" that's attached to a bomb's mid-section. These elements together provide
stability and guidance.
CBS also reports that a version of the kit for use with 500lbs bombs will be available
later this year.
Editor's note: No, I'm not going to stop using Macs or contrariwise buy more Macs
because of this coincident bit of information. For that matter, neither should you.
