Orange Micro to ship FireWire 800 card
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac

The long-time Mac upgrade developer announces a May release

Orange Micro has announced that it will ship its OrangeLink FireWire 800 PCI card in
May. This upgrade card is equipped with two 9-pin FireWire 800/1394b ports, so users
can simultaneously use two FireWire 800/1394b devices. It is also fully-backward
compatible with an additional 6-pin 1394a port.

"This combination ensures that you can enjoy the highest performance possible with the
FireWire peripheral of your choice, including DV camcorders and portable hard drives,"
the company states in its PR.

The OrangeLink FireWire 800/1394b PCI card is designed to operate in a 64-bit PCI
slot. It will also function in a 32-bit PCI slot, but this will limit its
performance.

The OrangeLink FireWire 800/1394b PCI Card will sell for $89.00 (SRP) and will ship in
May of 2003. Unspecified video editing software will be included with the package.

Editor's note: Unless I'm mistaken, the last PowerMac to ship with a 66MHz PCI slot
was the Yikes G4. Given the seemingly over-built power supplies and cooling of all
recent PowerMacs, not to mention the target user base, one would think that 66MHz PCI
would be default configuration. Alas, not.
