MacFixit: NetGear charging for Mac support
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
March 26th 2003

Though they advertise 'free' 24/7 support,' the company is apparently gouging Mac
users for the privilege

MacFixIt quotes a reader e-mail that states that NetGear is charging Mac users for
service that it advertises as "free" 24/7. Here's a quote of that letter:

"Netgear, makers of routers, ethernet hubs and the like, says on all six sides of
their boxes that they provide '24/7 free technical support.' It turns out that this is
true only for PC owners. I called with a question about my new router and was told (by
three people) that, since I am a Mac owner, there would be a charge of $2.00 per
minute or $30.00 per incident.

"They have no such thing as 'free 24/7 technical support' for the Mac. Of course, I
read all the documentation and no mention of this was made anywhere."

On this page, NetGear does state that it does, apparently without conditions, offer
24/7 support for its products. Here's a quote from that page:

"It is NETGEAR's mission to better serve small office and home office customers with
affordable, easy to install, powerful networking solutions. NETGEAR was the first
Networking company to offer 24x7 toll free support, and continues to provide the most
comprehensive baseline coverage to those who purchase our networking products. In an
attempt to broaden our support, we are now offering expanded capability with our
Premium Networking Support Service."

There's not a mention of Macs let alone charges for their "free" 24/7 tech support.

What's is listed, and clearly so, are the charges quoted by MacFixIt are the said same
rates charged by NetGear for "Premium Support."

Editor's note: Needless to say this is utter BS.
