I think it all started around 10.8

I thought my iMac had some unique issue. Incredible amounts of disk chatter.
GUI/UI responses taking sometimes 20 seconds, or up to a minute. But I've seen
a fair amount of discussion about this on the boards, so I know it's not
specific to my machine.

I see a lot of this: "UI updates were forcibly disabled by application":

12/24/12 9:34:46.649 PM WindowServer[94]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI
updates still disabled by application "iPhoto" after 15.00 seconds (server
forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced
disableUpdate call.
12/24/12 9:34:49.339 PM WindowServer[94]: reenable_update_for_connection: UI
updates were finally reenabled by application "iPhoto" after 17.69 seconds
(server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)

I'm wondering what might be the cause of "UI updates forcibly disabled by
application" from so many apps - including Mail, iPhoto, Safari and others.

I'm running an iMac 27 Quad Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM.

What's going on with "deny mach-lookup" ? I see a lot of that as well.

Spotlight indexing essentially brings my iMac to an unusable state. I don't
recall any of these issues in Lion or Snow Leopard.

Are the above issues indicative of a RAM problem? something else? sandboxing
in general? Mountain Lion?

Incredibly frustrated,

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be
trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And
most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They
somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is
secondary." - Steve Jobs
