The UI updates messages I have not seen, but all the rest is pretty standard 
chatter in my experience and can be safely ignored.

Could your issue be due to something pretty straightforward like a failing hard 
disk? Do you have something you can use to scan for bad blocks, like Techtool 
Pro? The "badblocks" utility is free, but I believe it needs to be compiled 
from source and I don't recall whether it does non-destructive testing, off the 
top of my head.
