slots, each of which was officially rated at taking 4 GB sticks. Unofficially 
_most_ 8 GB sticks would work, but some won’t.

I don’t think the late 2009 iMac supports 8GB DIMMs at all. 4 slots and a 
maximum of 16GB according to MacTracker.

according to everymac.com, the i5/i7 late 2009 versions can "unofficially" handle 32GB, while the Core 2 Duo versions cannot
