A computer-clueless co-worker of mine had a similar problem under OS 10.1.??. She reinstalled the OS on top of the current fubarred installation and things were magically fixed.

YMMV.

Ok, steering back on track...

I always create another user account on my OS X machines.

If you see something extremely odd, reboot and log in as another user
and verify that the problem is with the system, and not just an
individual user's account.
Did that. Same problem (at least with missing fonts and the inability to
drag anything in the Finder). Even as root.

If you're a terminal lover you can always
boot into single user mode and see what's up as well...
Well, I can certainly do that. But exactly what should I be looking for?
As a Unix machine, the box seems to be responding fine--it's still doing
firewalling and NAT just fine, for instance. It's just the Mac-y stuff
that's fubar'ed.
