We stopped producing MacPorts installer packages for Mac OS X 10.4 after 2.9.3
but I don't know why. Maybe this was part of the reason. But we do have people
using 2.10.5 on Mac OS X 10.4 so it must be possible to compile it. I don't
know what the memory requirements to do so are. Are you low on free disk space?

What exact error message did you get? Selfupdate should have noticed that 2.9.3
is outdated and attempted to download 2.10.5 and compile it.
