Alex,
That explains it. This did throw me when I started exploring Mail this past weekend.

I will adapt to the way Mail works. I tried what you suggested with the unified folders and now I see what I want. That will work fine the way it is.

Couple things. One, when interacting with the Favorites Bar, I see 3 buttons. The last two both say drop down. One is checked, the other is unchecked. What are these for?

Then, is it possible to hide some of the folders in the Mailbox table? Thanks.

The Mac does things backwards to what you might expect. Instead of offering
each account and folders under it, Mail on OS X offers one folder, with
accounts under it. For example, if you find the inbox, you can press right
arrow to view all four accounts, thus viewing inbox emails from jut that
account. The advantage is that, if you want to just get to all your mail and
don't care which account it's from, you can simply view your unified inbox and
not choose an account. I do this nearly all the time, and it lets me view email
from all my accounts so I can quickly see everything.

There are ways of setting things up however you'd like. For instance, you could
make each account's inbox a favorite, then switch to each one with cmd-1
through cmd-4. Or, you could embrace the unified approach for inboxes, and set
up a folder for each mailing list or mailing list category you're on. That's my
setup--cmd-1 for my unified inbox, cmd-2 for my Apple-related lists, and cmd-3
for my programming-related lists. The nice thing about this latter option is
that, if you use server-based rules to sort messages to different folders,
those rules apply equally on your Mac and your phone, or any other device you
use (like an iPad).

Finally I am working to get away from Thunderbird under Windows and use
Apple's Mail. But years of TB is making it difficult for me to learn a new Mail
application.

Because of the recent threads here, I unchecked Classic view. What I need to
work out is how to manage 4 email accounts, one of which is strictly for email
lists. In TB I would leave that one expanded and browse the mailboxes under
that account. I may have toggled something off because now I do hear which
account I am looking at when on the mailbox table.

I never used the unified folders in TB and thus I want to solve this. Then I
can move on to learning to work in the Messages table. I have collected notes
from this list and from Applevis, much of which has been helpful. Thanks.
