PPTP is a particular VPN protocol, so you don’t choose between PPTP and VPN but 
PPTP and some other protocol.

PPTP is very convenient because it’s widely used and supported by everything, 
but it’s less secure than other protocols such as OpenVPN or IPSec.  I prefer 
IPSec myself, as it’s standard and iOS has native support for it.  But it’s 
more complicated to set up than PPTP or OpenVPN.  You need an app for anything 
besides PPTP or IPSec on iOS.

Maybe your VPN provider has an app, and maybe they also have manual 
configuration instructions.  Look out for them, as they’ll tell you which 
protocols are in use and/or help you set it up.
