One additional note to add to the already good suggestions. If you don't want to upgrade to a MacOS that supports continuity and/or handoff, or at your hardware doesn't support that. Then you could get wi-Fi sharing on your iPhone so that the computer could use your cellular connection to reach the Internet. Depending on your carrier, this might cost money.
