In addition to the very good suggestions you have received, there is a book, written by Janet Ingber, and published by National Braille Press, called Mac Basics For The Beginning User. I think that when somebody is in the very beginning of learning how to do something, they need to have some type of organized fashion of learning it, rather than just picking it up in bits and pieces.
