I doubt it was simple as Apple last year made it impossible to use a terminal command to restore the chime. Yes "put it back" seems not to work since the chime has now been out of service for two years.

The reason is actually quite simple. Mainstream users hate having their
machines making noise.

We've had this problem in Linux systems forever. There's been strong
pushback to remove any beep from the boot process, and to remove the
very standard beep on backspace when at the beginning of the line in a
tty.

I think it's hard for us to appreciate how such seemingly small things
could matter so much, but I promise they've been consistently and
vehemently denounced for years.

I think our best argument is that some kind of sonic indicator needs to
be a configurable option by way of accessibility accomodation. It
doesn't need to be the default setting. It just needs to be available to
be enabled by the user who requires that kind of support. That's a
resonable accomodation, imo, and what we should be explicitly
requesting.

I think it important to be this precise. Just saying "put the boot chime
back" isn't going anywhere.

Everything I came across via Google indicates the removal of the chime
was done at the firmware level starting with 2017 models. So it would make
sense to contact Apple Accessibility as well as sending them feedback. I did
not find any real reason why Apple did this.

Yeah it use to be possible to get it back using a PRAM reset but that just now

It's seemingly gone from the firmware

I believe someone posted something a while back about contacting apple
accessibility about it as we use it to know where things are at with the
devices,

Not sure they are aware or not.

For a time there was a way to enable it. But I believe it's now completely
removed.

Basic problem is the lack of the boot chime. That's a big deal, imo.

Simon and I have boot chime on our 2013 vintage gear, but I believe
the new machines no longer support boot chime. Hope I'm wrong, but I
suspect I'm not wrong.

Without boot chime you're left guessing when to hold down the Option
key, and for how long. I hate guessing on things like that. It's not
very efficient.

Such a basic thing to create such a large nuisance to this userbase.

Hi folks.
Subject says it all.
I’m thinking of getting windows 10 and installing it on my 2018 Mac Mini.
I think I heard somewhere I would have problems with the new chip,
in the Mini?
