I've used a Mac for a good 7 or more years. Int time, I've used
Windows, the Mac, and several forms of Linux. The Mac, nor VoiceOver, is
perfect, but for me, especially for reading Mail, writing documents, or even
dabbling in code, the Mac is great for beginners, and advanced users too.
VoiceOver can hold your hand through any task. You'd lead it, of course, just
like the iPhone, but it would help a lot. Once you're used to things, VoiceOver
can be used in amazing ways, like only saying the subject of an and nothing
more if you want, making going through email an absolute joy compared to the
Windows screen readers. Also, one can move and resize windows, and even single
controls. One can know if an app launches in the background. With the Mac
itself, you can have time announced. Spell checking, are built in. Auto correct
is a joy to use. All this could be done in Windows if Microsoft wanted, but it
hasn't yet. So, for now, Mac is the operating system of the future, for general
computing, until iPad takes place.

Actually
Marie, I was referring not to the QuickStart tutorial, but to the getting
started guide. That’s a much more in-depth tutorial it’s an actual book of
chapters devoted to various functions of voiceover. It’s the bottom most entry
in the help system just below the QuickStart tutorial. It also has appendices
for various keystrokes and functions etc.  Good luck.

Marie, don’t forget to plow
through the getting started guide. You can find it by pressing the help menu
keys VO plus h. The getting started guide is down at the bottom of the list.
You might find some trouble in browsing at first, but try to bring up the
table of contents and you’ll find a wealth of information about using
voiceover on the Mac. Also check out the other items in the voiceover help
menu while you’re at it. I think you’ll find all you need there along with
questions on list you should learn quite quickly.

Hi Marie and
    others,

Welcome to
the list Marie, what are the podcasts you’ve listened to so far? I may have
herd some of them already but you never no. I’m also a new user, well I’ve
been using a Mac since January but still consider myself a beginner. I only
ever used windows machines and never liked it, loads of people told me not
to get a Mac but I’m glad I did. The folks this list have been a huge help
and I would have been lost without them.

I am
another new member, but I am a little more experienced than Marie. I
joined this group because I have a job with my church editing documents.
We are using Pages and I don’t know a whole lot about pages. We are not
using the templates, thank heaven. We are just using it the way one would
use text edit so I don’t have a lot to learn but any fine points would be
beneficial. This looks like a very good group and I know a few of you
from
      other lists

I already
know that the Mac is a much better computer than PCs  using
      windows.

Thanks for

visited and just downloaded the free tutorial from DEC. I also am
familiar

a

Marie,

You heard
from John already. I recommend you visit his web site at
macfortheblind.com and look at his
audio tutorials. Many are cost-based, but there are about a half dozen
basic tutorials that are free, and are very well done. I learned a lot
from John’s tutorials, and also from those done by David Woodbridge on
appleviz.com (did I spell that one
      right?).

I
did a lot of listening and struggling in my first 3 or 4 months using the
Mac, but am becoming more comfortable with the Sox
      approach.

I
made it a point to become familiar first with the Mail and Textedit apps,
and then spent a whole lot of time learning how to get around in Finder.
Calendar and Contacts were a bit more difficult to use, and I’m still not
      comfortable with Contacts.

Other
places you should spend time poking around would be in the Voiceover
      Utility and System Preferences.

And
of course post your questions to this list. There are some real experts
on
      board.
