Donna,
i am sorry you are experiencing such frustrations. almost reason enough to dig out that old typewriter again no? Seriously, do report the poor business practices of said third party Apple service option, Apple needs to know, as I imagine that violates some type of agreement with them.

Hi Cara,

The people who wanted to charge me were a third-party Apple Service outlet. I
actually bought the computer at an Apple store in another city, because we
don't have one where I live. I was really surprised, too, given that my
appointment with them was actually set up by the Apple tech I spoke with on the
phone this morning.

Wow! Donna! -For what it’s worth, I cannot believe that they even brought up

this is so far over the top in my opinion, that it’s just beyond words. Was
this the Apple Store or a third-party dealer, if you don’t mind my asking? My
apologies if I’ve missed this in your message.

I wish I had a solution for you or anything that I could think of to help.

I also have an M1 MBA and while my time moving into it wasn’t necessarily super
smooth, it has not been nearly what you’re seeing. Personally, I also thought
of abandoning the M1 and going back to an Intel machine until the kinks with
Big Sur were worked out. I’m very sorry to hear about your experience, and to
whatever vendor thought it was a good idea to charge you, (be it Apple or
otherwise) then shame on them! This is absolutely disgraceful behavior for any
vendor.

If I can think of anything that might help I’ll certainly post.

Best of luck to you Donna.

Cheers!

Cara

Yes, if I could get the computer to speak. But so far, neither I nor several
others have been able to make that happen. There should not be compatibility
issues, since my MBP is also running Big Sur and has been kept updated.

Okay,
I should have clarified.
Can you move all your documents to the cloud and use that instead of Time
Machine?
Maybe something in the previous backup isn't compatible between the two
computers?
I'm new to the Mac, but I remember a time when there were compatibility issues
between JAWS and older versions of Windows.

Not quite sure what you're asking. A lot of my documents are in the cloud, but
not all. If you're asking about signing out of iCloud, my husband will have to
help me do that, since I have no access to the computer without speech.

Subject: experience with N1 MacBook Air

Hi all,

Recently there has been a discussion about the new MBA, so I thought I would
share my experience.

I unboxed my MBA yesterday afternoon, and it's been nothin but a headache
since. When I booted it for the first time, all seemed fine. But after I
migrated my data using a time machine backup, VO went silent.

Yesterday afternoon I called Apple Accessibility, and spent a half hour on
hold, then another half hour on the phone with some idiot who spent the call
directing me to position the camera on my phone with one hand so she could see
the screen, while she directed the finger on my other hand to select and
activate items on the trackpad. to say the least, the experience was
unpleasant and frustrating, and I finally just gave up and hung up. My husband
and I spent most of last night trying to troubleshoot the problem, as I could
do nothing without sighted assistance. We were not successful.

This morning I called Apple to request a replacement. I spent another half
hour on the phone with a very nice support person, at the end of which, he
directed me to take my computer to the local authorized Apple Service dealer.
My husband and I both just took two hours off work to do that. I just got back
from there. They weren't able to fix it either. He said that it looks like VO
is unable to select a voice, and has recommended that I install the latest Big
Sur update. I'm downloading it now. If that doesn't work, I'm going to demand
a return, and go back to using my 2017 MacBook Pro, which works just fine.

So, that's my experience with the new MBA, FWIW.
Best,
Donna
