Hey Pete,

DG: I would love to hear more about your work with the Portland airport. I have
to say I hate that airport with a passionn! That is the longest bloody walk to
baggage claim that I have ever seen, which is a problem for somebody with bad
knees coming off of a four hour flight. It’s the only airport that I’ve ever
been to where I had to get somebody to wheel me to baggage claim in a
wheelchair.

PD: Probably shouldn’t go too deeply here as it’s a bit OT, but the length of
your walk depends on the airline you used, and what gate you came into. In
particular, some of the Alaska gates are definitely quite a long ways from
either ticketing or baggage claim. MY wife has a muscular problem that prevents
her from walking long distances, and she, too, has to have a wheel chare
sometimes. I’ll confess that, even though I have good legs and balance, one
time my flight operated out of Gate 23, which is the farthest away you can be,
and I took them up on an offer to put me into a wheelchair. We’re working with
providers to offer much more timely support for folks who need this kind of
help. We can chat offline about this if you like.

DG: You’ll get used to living without the home button. But just because you get
used to it, doesn’t mean you’ll love it, which at least is the case for me.

PD: I’ve listened to a couple of podcasts that show you how to work without the
home button, and in one of Jonathan Mosen’s podcasts he did say you could use
VO Practice to help get used to it. So we’ll see, but I bet you’ll be right
that I won’t totally love not having the home button, but can and will accept
it.

DG: Tell me more about what you’re talking about regarding enhanced audio. Is
there something I missed?

PD: From what I’ve read and heard, both 16 and 16 Pro have a new audio mixing
feature, but apparently the Pro has like four different microphones on it so
that you can get much better audio recordings. I did hear a demo somewhere, but
for the life of me can’t go back to the one I heard. I’ll be happy to report
once I get my phone and have had a chance to work with it for a bit.

Pete

Cheers,

Donna

I’ve decided to go ahead and buy the 16 Pro. I’m not sure how much I would use
the LIDAR feature immediately, but I’m thinking I’d rather have it even if I
don’t use it right away, as opposed to not having it and wishing I had gotten
it in the first place. I’m working very closely with the folks at Portland
Airport as they implement Goodmaps, along with other accessibility stuff as
they continue to expand their terminal, and I’m sure it’s gonna help to be able
to see how I can incorporate the use of all this new technology into other
aspects of my life. I’m also interested in checking out what sounds like
enhanced audio capabilities.

Donna, I had to chuckle about your comment in another thread about most likely
missing that good old Home button. I swear by it, too, and like you wish it
wouldn’t go away altogether. However, I’m hearing too many people say “oh
you’ll get used to it”, and I’m sure I will. So I sure hope they’re right!
<grin>

I just upgraded my SE 3 to iOS 18, so while waiting for my new phone, which
won’t come till the middle of the month, I’ll have some time to learn the new
features of iOS 18.

Lidar is an extremely useful feature that can be utilized by blind individuals
in many ways.

The iPhone Pro models include native utilities such as people, distance and
door detection, and the new Scene Detection offered in iOS 18.

Apps such as the free SeeingAI, have been taking advantage of Lidar for several
years, as does many other apps that use AI.

I'm in the same boat as Donna, and I actually have a slightly more basic
question: What actually could a blind person use LIDAR for? I've tried to look
for some specifics but not coming up with anything.

First of all, the size difference between the iPhone 16 and the 16 Pro is
negligible, and you won’t notice the difference unless you put one up along
side the other, so I wouldn’t give that any consideration.

Secondly, as for Lidar, that depends on you, and how you plan to use your
device.
If you are interested in using apps that take advantage of Lidar, then you
should consider the Pro model. If using these apps is not important to you,
than go with the non-Pro iPhone,

This is a choice only you can make for yourself.

Hi all,

So, just tossing this out there for discussion.

I’m about to upgrade to the iPhone 16, and am trying to decide whether I really
need the Pro. I’m very attracted to the smaller size of the iPhone 16, and I’m
wondering how much Lidar really matters? Thoughts anyone?
Cheers,
Donna
