Hi,  I suggest you press vo f8 for the voiceover utility.
Go down to commanders or press c.
Tab to trackpad and press space bar.
Tab to enable trackpad commander and press space bar to check.

This is quite the long way of doing it, but if you aren't used to the trackpad 
on your macbook, now you have a point of reference.  IE, you know for sure that 
the trackpad is on.  

Then I suggest you right away turn on the keyboard help control option k, and 
practice the gestures a little bit.

You can also flick around this commanders window without doing any damage as 
far as I know. 

It takes longer, but I really think this is the most reliable way to get up and 
running with trackpad.
