Hello everyone, and thanks so much to all of you for giving me excellent help 
and feedback on my question.

The solution described below works for me.  If you ever need to read the long 
header for a specific message, just press Shift-Cmd-H.  When you're done 
looking at the header, just invoke the same command again.
