Is it possible your document was upside down? I made sure mine was right side up. I know that automatic orientation would be a great feature, but it is often easy to tell which end of a document is the top by a staple, or possibly even having someone orient documents for you before you throw them on the scanner.
I had great results with it, but I was sure the document was right side up and followed Ann's list of settings to the letter.
