I can't answer all your questions because I am totally blind, so I don't use 
any kind of magnification. I understand the cvommand to make text on the Mac 
bigger is command plus sign. 

I haven't done it, but I guess you know by now that you can put Windows on a 
Mac. 

I got Abby Fine Reader Express for my Mac. It does a good job of scanning, but 
I haven't much time to mess with it much. 

I athink you will want Pages for your Mac because you can read and write Word 
files with it. 

I will say that my iPhone is a better PDF than either my Mac or the Vista 
computer in the other room using Jaws. I can and have read PDF files on m y 
Mac, but I have found that if I'm just going to read the thing, my iPhone is 
better because I can the PDF file into iBooks.
