Hold up though. You forgot something *really!* important about this method.
This only works if cursor tracking is disabled. 1. With cursor tracking enabled, select the first msg you want to begin selecting noncontiguously from. By the way, also, be sure you're interacting with the table first before you try this. 2. Turn off cursor tracking with vo+shift+F3. 3. Press vo+down arrow until you get to the next item you wish to select. 4. Now, press vo+command+space bar to select the item. 5. Keep vo down arrowing until you see the next item to be selected, then repeat step 4. The reason this is so important to understand first before trying this method is because if your cursor tracking is enabled, then as soon as you vo+down arrow, you're gonna deselect the previous item and just move down the list as if you were navigating the table normally not even caring about selecting things to start with. If cursor tracking is off, then your voiceover cursor can freely move without having to worry about your mouse pointer or your keyboard focus tracking along.
