Hi Mary,

If you have one of the new Macs that supports the Power Nap feature, if you go 
to system preferences and to the energy saving preference, turn off Power Nap 
by unchecking the box and reboot, your mail sounds should come back. I found 
that for some very strange reason, the power nap feature sometimes kills the 
mail sounds. I turned off power nap and the problem completely went away for 
me. I am using a 13 inch retina MacBook Pro.
