I have not been following this conversation closely, but if you are 
using samba just to transfer files, consider using rsync/scp/unison.  I 
use rsync (over ssh) and scp to transfer files to and from my n800 (I 
actually back up my n800 nightly via rsnapshot).  I am Windows Free[tm] 
at home, but there are Windows programs that provide ssh (putty) and rsync.

Rsync is available via cygwin (ugh, but gets the job done)

Unison may be just the capability you are looking for (full smart
