Somehow, I have fixed all problems of cropped letters in the preferences and
in buttons.

The other day, I decided that since Mandrake Installer had loaded a lot of
crap I do not use, I would put my system on a diet. I deleted all of Gnome's
window manager and all the utilities that come with it and a bunch of other
stuff I have not used. About 150MB of stuff :-)

Almost immediately when I started up M after all this, it looked different and
it wasn't till today that I noticed the buttons were different. They are now a
rectangle with a rh/bottom drop shadow. I also reduced the number of external
graphics libraries so wxWindows now uses it's internal routines.

So whatever the problem is, it is not directly related to themes or GTK1.2 but
probably some "stuff" that you do not need either :-)
