I agree with Mark that this sounds like a problem with the Python interpreter. I just don't see what could be causing Mailman to slow down. I think if you want to continue to debug this, it will involve hacking SMTPDirect.py or replacing it with a simpler but instrumented handler for the list in question. Do you want to go down that route?
