I'm aware Manitu/Nixspam shut down a while ago, but iirc they promised RFC
compliant slow shutdown. As of today we see an increased number of rejects due
to Manitu listings. A quick lookup of some samples indicates that
ix.dnsbl.manitu.net is returning 127.0.0.2 for every query. Thus any mail
administrator still querying that list results in their clients having a very
quiet inbox today...
Can anyone confirm? Is there a statement from Manitu?
They complained in February that still 1 million requests per hour are sent to
the DNSBL and started to send out emails to the abuse contacts of the querying
IP addresses. Maybe they were not happy with the results and decided to list
the world to bring down the numbers? I don't know. After about two hours of
returning 127.0.0.2 for everything the DNSBL responds with NXDOMAIN again.
confirmed: no bounces any longer from where they came until at least 40
minutes ago.
It'd nonetheless be interesting to know whether this was "just" an
accidental mishap - or indeed, as you suggest, an intended shot across
the bow.
Cheers,
