I generally like and agree with Postel's rule.

But I also understand and appreciate the Brown M&M clause in Van Halen performance contracts. -- If people can't or won't do something as simple as remove brown M&Ms what else more complex and important thing will they not do that the contract specifies?

That being said, I suspect that in this particular case, the human in the system can realize that the space probably shouldn't be there and the rest of the syntax is okay (from memory). -- As such, munging -> cleaning the record may be okay. But in doing so you take the responsibility of not being quite standards compliant. You are now on the hook for your own small edge case. It's a judgement call on your part.
