While it is true that accuracy is very important for spatial
analysis, the problem is with clipping regions and the presentation of
objects. I can pretty easily tell if Chicago has been clipped
accurately.

The slowness of 5.5 however destroys its credibility. In presenting
crime mapping to a ley audience or to police who are interested in
adopting it, the ability to do live demos is crucial. Power Point
presentations mostly generate skepticism.

Additionally, the crime analysis capabilties of a mapping program
require interaction with the crime analyst. A crime analyst who must
wait 15 or 20 minutes for a map is no longer interacting with the
program.

Mapinfo rewrote their object handling routines because the old
versions were
error-laden and crash-prone. The new routines are slower, but work
much,
much more reliably.

Upgrades do indeed mean that products improve, but speed is not the
only
measure of performance. I'll a take a correct answer that is slow to
arrive
at over a speedy wrong one anyday.
